Scene 1
Manager's office · Hiring day
Diamond sits across from the manager with her application folder. Through the open door, an aide greets a resident by name. Diamond notices and smiles.
Manager
Your references speak highly of you, Diamond. Why do you want to work in a nursing home?
Diamond
I want to know the people I'm caring for. Not just their room numbers. Their routines, their families.
Manager
That's what we want here. We're offering you the nurse position. Can you start Monday?
Diamond
Yes. Who will I be learning from? I want to understand the home before taking on a shift.
Manager
Tawana will handle your orientation. Ask questions. Nobody expects you to know everything on your first day.
Diamond
Then you have yourself a new nurse. Thank you. I'm ready to get started.
Scene 2
Nursing home entrance and station · Monday morning
Diamond arrives carrying her lunch and orientation folder. She pauses at the nursing home's sign, takes a breath, and enters. Tawana hands her a badge. Qunetta approaches with a linen cart; Michelle sits at the desk.
Diamond
Good morning. I'm Diamond, the new nurse. I'm here for my first day with Tawana.
Tawana
That's me. Put your bag in the staff room. We've already got a full hall waiting.
Qunetta
Welcome, Diamond. I'm Qunetta, one of the aides. I'll show you where everything is.
Michelle
Michelle. Also an aide. Hopefully another nurse means somebody finally listens when we need help.
Diamond
I hope so, too. First, can we go over the handoff and who's covering each hall?
Tawana
We'll go over it on the tour. Stay with me. This place moves fast.
Scene 3
East hall and common room · Orientation
Tawana points out the staff schedule, supply room and call-light panel. A light comes on. Qunetta knocks at the resident's doorway while Michelle continues sorting papers. Later, Diamond meets Mr. Ellis in the common room.
Tawana
East hall, common room, supplies through there. The assignment sheet tells you who's working where.
Diamond
That light just came on. How do you coordinate who's answering when everyone's busy?
Qunetta
I'll go. We let each other know. Mr. Ellis likes to know someone's heard him.
Michelle
He asks for company a lot. There isn't always time to sit down.
Diamond
I understand being busy. But he still needs an answer. Can I meet him when he's ready?
Mr. Ellis
You're the new face. Are you staying, or just passing through like the others?
Diamond
I'm your new nurse, Diamond. I'm learning my way around. What should I know about you?
Mr. Ellis
Ask before moving my chair. And don't promise you'll come back if you don't mean it.
Diamond
Fair enough. This is your home. I need to learn your routines, not just the staff's.
Scene 4
Nurses' station · Afternoon
Tawana slides an envelope across the counter. Inside is a shift report with a blank signature line. Diamond's name is printed beneath it. Her first shift hasn't even ended.
Diamond
Whose name belongs on this report?
Tawana
Not everything here needs a witness.
Diamond
Then why does it need my signature?
Diamond leaves the signature line blank. Tawana quietly takes the report back.
