Scene 1
East hall · Afternoon
A call light blinks. Qunetta is already moving; Michelle stays seated.
Qunetta
That's Mr. Ellis's light. I'm going.
Michelle
You went last time.
Qunetta
It's still a person asking for help.
Diamond
I'll check the rest of the hall.
Tawana
Don't turn every light into a committee meeting.
Scene 2
Mr. Ellis's doorway · Moments later
Mr. Ellis gestures toward a chair. Qunetta waits for his invitation before entering.
Mr. Ellis
I just didn't want the room to feel empty.
Qunetta
Would you like me to stay a moment?
Mr. Ellis
If you can. I know the others have work.
Qunetta
I can stay while Diamond checks the hall.
Michelle
From the hall: The log says that light was answered late.
Diamond
Then we document what happened—not who we'd like to blame.
Scene 3
East hall · Between rounds
The call-light panel is quiet for now. Qunetta catches Michelle beside the linen cart. Diamond waits nearby. Michelle folds a towel twice before answering.
Qunetta
You said the log was probably right, but you haven't asked me what time I actually went into his room.
Michelle
I'm trying to finish rounds before the next shift walks into a mess. Can we talk about this later?
Diamond
We're not asking you to take sides. We want to understand why your account doesn't match Qunetta's notes.
Michelle
And if I say something wrong, who has to explain it to the manager? I do, not the paper.
Qunetta
I know what it's like to be watched for one mistake. It still matters when a resident asks.
Michelle
You can afford to say that. People call you kind. They call me efficient when I keep moving.
Qunetta
You are efficient. That doesn't mean you don't care. It means everyone has learned to ask more of you.
Michelle
I have two halls on my list and one person covering the desk. Nobody asks how that feels.
Diamond
I can't fix staffing today. But I can compare the notes and the log instead of making assumptions.
Michelle
Comparing them means somebody gets questioned. Somebody has to sit in that office and defend their job.
Qunetta
Mr. Ellis asked for company, not a report. But the time we spent with him belongs in the record.
Michelle
Then write what you saw. Just don't expect the rest of us to be ready to follow you.
Scene 4
Nurses' station · Evening
Diamond compares Qunetta's notes with the call-light log. A timestamp has been crossed out. Michelle stops in the doorway.
Diamond
Who changed this?
Michelle
Maybe you're reading it wrong.
Qunetta
I wrote the time down when I answered.
Diamond
Then we'll keep both versions.
Michelle's eyes move from Diamond to Tawana. Neither says another word.
