The Script
Approx. 3-minute performance · Fictional drama
Scene 1
Front desk · Morning
An inspector arrives. The manager welcomes her while staff exchange wary looks.
Inspector
I'd like to speak with staff and residents privately.
Manager
Of course. We'll make space.
Tawana
This is about one disputed log. It's being handled.
Diamond
The inspector can review the records directly.
Michelle
Are we all supposed to stop working now?
Qunetta
People still need us. I'll cover the hall.
Scene 2
Common room · Later
Mr. Ellis chooses a seat near the window. The inspector sits at a respectful distance. The staff leave them to speak privately.
Inspector
Would you like to speak here or somewhere quieter?
Mr. Ellis
Here. I know this room.
Inspector
What would you like me to understand?
Mr. Ellis
When I ask for company, tell me whether you can stay.
Inspector
And if someone can't?
Mr. Ellis
Tell me the truth. Don't make me feel wrong for asking.
Scene 3
Staff corridor · Before the final interview
Michelle holds her phone without unlocking it. Diamond waits without crowding her. Tawana arrives from the station. A long silence settles over the group.
Michelle
The inspector asked me the same question three different ways. I kept hearing my answer come out smaller.
Diamond
You don't owe me an answer. You should be able to tell the inspector what you know in your own words.
Michelle
And if those words cost me my job? It's easy to say be honest when you're not the one cornered.
Qunetta
Nobody here feels safe right now. But a resident shouldn't have to pay for the way we're being pressured.
Michelle
You say that like the record is separate from the people who get blamed when it looks untidy.
Tawana
It isn't separate. I've watched people disappear from the schedule before anybody finished asking the questions.
Diamond
Then they need to ask carefully. That's not a reason to leave a signature there that isn't mine.
Tawana
I've worked here years. One account can make it look as though the whole place is mine to answer for.
Michelle
Maybe everybody knows one piece. Maybe nobody wants to be the first person to say their piece out loud.
Qunetta
You don't have to explain anybody else's actions. You can start with what you know yourself.
Michelle
And then people ask why I didn't speak up before now. They always ask that part first.
Diamond
Let them ask. Being scared is something you can explain. Being silent doesn't make the questions go away.
Scene 4
Manager's office · Afternoon
Tawana and Michelle sit apart. The manager sets an access report on the desk. The inspector listens.
Manager
Tawana, you're off the floor pending review. This isn't a final finding.
Tawana
That account doesn't prove who used it.
Inspector
Then help us understand what happened.
Michelle
I used it. I changed the time.
Tawana
Michelle—
Michelle
But I didn't sign Diamond's name.
Michelle reaches into her pocket. 'I kept the message telling me to do it.' Cut to black.
