The Script
Approx. 3-minute performance · Fictional drama
Scene 1
Nurses' station · Night
The floor is quiet except for the desk clock and a printer.
Diamond
The handoff notes are missing two entries.
Tawana
Then they weren't important.
Qunetta
One was Mr. Ellis asking for his niece to be called.
Michelle
He can call her in the morning.
Diamond
He asked us tonight. That belongs in the handoff.
Tawana
You want to report every bad feeling?
Scene 2
Common room · Later
Mr. Ellis sits by the window with his coat folded beside him.
Diamond
Your niece is on her way. Is this a good place to wait?
Mr. Ellis
Here's fine. I like seeing the hallway.
Qunetta
I'll sit nearby, if you'd like.
Mr. Ellis
Nearby is good. I don't need a fuss.
Tawana
The night log is still unsigned.
Diamond
I won't sign for work I didn't verify.
Scene 3
Staff room · Late evening
A vending machine hums. Diamond reviews the incomplete handoff. Qunetta sits for the first time all night. Outside, footsteps stop and then continue.
Qunetta
You've been reading that page for ten minutes. Are you checking the entries or trying to decide what comes next?
Diamond
Both. If I report it, they'll ask why I waited. If I sign it, I'm claiming I know more than I do.
Qunetta
You didn't make those entries. You can ask for clarification without deciding tonight who's responsible for them.
Diamond
I also can't pretend the crossed-out time from yesterday was just nothing. It still hasn't been explained.
Qunetta
I know. I saw your face when you found it. I just don't want you alone with this.
Diamond
You could lose your position for backing me. You have people depending on that paycheck, too.
Qunetta
My sister's tuition doesn't pause because this place is difficult. But I chose this work to be present.
Diamond
Being present shouldn't mean risking your livelihood every time someone with more power makes a mess.
Qunetta
It shouldn't. Still, Mr. Ellis asked for his niece. We did right to make sure she knew.
Diamond
And Tawana says the notes weren't important. Maybe she's protecting the shift. Maybe she's protecting herself.
Qunetta
We don't know. Keep to what you saw, what you wrote, and what you can verify.
Diamond
That's what I want. An honest handoff. I didn't come here to spend the night wondering who I can trust.
Scene 4
Service corridor · Midnight
The printer spits out a fresh page. Diamond finds her name below a signature she doesn't recognize. There is a handwritten warning on the back.
Diamond
I didn't sign this.
Qunetta
Keep it. Exactly as you found it.
Diamond
Someone wanted me to see it.
On the back of the page: 'Don't trust the log.' Someone on the floor knows more than they're saying.
